IT'S HOME SWEET FOR CHINATOWN BEAUTY
"Oh! It's great to be home. I can't wait to go swimming, sunbathing, see the familiar sights and eat the food we have," happily said Miss Chinatown UK 1980 (above) as she landed at the airport last night. Miss Wang Tin Sue (Sue to her friends), 18, Is the first Singapore girl to win the title. Said the Eurasian beauty who beat more than 50 girls: I was shocked that I won. The first runner-up from Hong Kong is so much prettier."
A student of English literature at Holy Cross Convent in Surrey, she was encouraged to take part by friends. The contest was open to girls in Britain who have at least one Chinese parent. This 1.64 meter beauty said of her Chinese-English parents: "Although I don't look like a Chinese, I do try to act like one and, for me, the Chinese way of life is the best.
"I find that being a Singaporean and a Chinese gives me a kind of stability, that little bit deep down inside me that makes me feel I'm different from others at school in Britain.
"I also find it easier to communicate with Chinese and feel more at home among them,".

唐人街选美皇后荣归故里
"啊!回家的感觉太棒了!我已经迫不及待想去游泳、晒日光浴、重游熟悉的风景,品尝家乡美食了。"1980年英国唐人街小姐选美冠军(上图)昨晚抵达机场时欣喜地说道。18岁的王天素(友人昵称素娟)是首位夺得该头衔的新加坡女孩。这位击败50多名参赛者的欧亚混血佳丽坦言:"得知夺冠时我惊呆了,来自香港的亚军选手明明比我漂亮得多。"
这位萨里郡圣十字修道院英语文学系的学生,是在友人鼓励下参赛的。该赛事面向英国境内至少有一名华人父母的少女开放。这位身高1.64米的佳丽谈及其中英混血家庭时说:"虽然我的相貌不太像华人,但我始终努力遵循中华文化——对我而言,中国式的生活方式是最美好的。"
"作为新加坡华裔,这种身份赋予我一种笃定的归属感,内心深处那份独特的文化根基让我觉得自己与英国校园里的同学截然不同。"
"而且我发现自己与华人交流更为自在,在他们中间总能感受到家的温暖。"
