Barbara Yung Breaks Away from Her Delicate Image to Play a Stern Policewoman

The petite and delicate Barbara Yung faced skepticism from many before she officially portrayed Huang Rong. However, after bringing the character to life, not only did her popularity soar, but the mischievous and willful traits of Huang Rong seemed to become inseparably associated with her.
Since the roles Barbara has taken on have all been similar in nature, some feel that her acting lacks variety, limited to a single expression. Addressing this criticism, she said:
"You tell me, is there any drama where a character only needs one expression? But I understand what you mean—you’re saying that the personalities of the characters I’ve played aren’t very different, so my expressions don’t vary much. But what can I do? The company assigns me roles, and I give my best effort. Most of the time, they give me the same type of role, so what choice do I have?" she said with a hint of resignation.
A Single Expression?
"Well, next time, I’ll be playing a policewoman!" she added proudly.
The policewoman role is completely different from Huang Rong, not only in character but also in the setting—modern-day versus ancient times.
Looking at her delicate and dainty appearance, one can’t help but wonder how she’ll project authority in the role of a policewoman. Does she feel confident about pulling it off?
"It’s hard to say. Being satisfied with my own performance isn’t enough; real success depends on the audience’s approval," she said.
After acting for so many years, Barbara understands that whether her performance is recognized or not ultimately lies with the audience. It’s not enough for her to feel content with a single role.
