Barbara Yung Mei-Ling's "Fear of Heights"
When people hear about "fear of heights," they often think it refers to someone who is afraid to look down from high places or stand at great heights—a minor issue related to vertigo. Barbara Yung frequently mentioned that she had a fear of heights, and people assumed it was the same condition. However, her "fear of heights" was quite different. Those who heard her should be careful not to mistake the meaning. The "height" she feared referred to her acting partners, most of whom were tall. Being petite and short-statured herself, Barbara repeatedly found herself acting alongside much taller male leads.
As a result, Barbara's legs and neck often bore the brunt of these height differences. If she had to film a series spanning dozens of episodes, one might joke that she could turn into a giraffe by the end!
To be honest, it seemed like TVB intentionally gave Barbara a hard time. Her first role in The Legend of the Condor Heroes paired her with Felix Wong Yat-Wah, who was significantly taller than she was. During filming, she had to tiptoe and crane her neck constantly. She said it was "such a struggle!"
Next, Barbara was paired with Adam Cheng Siu-Chow in The man in the middle/Sandwich man. Adam was another tall leading man. Later, she partnered with Michael Miu Kiu-Wai in The Foundation and The Fearless Duo! Once again, she had to tiptoe and look up to her co-stars.
Because of this, whenever the topic of "height" came up, Barbara would turn pale and show visible dread. She would joke about her "fear of heights" but truly dreaded her on-screen struggles with taller co-stars.
